The First #SWCCGinPublic Push Was a Rousing Success

Now more than two decades since the Game went out of print, the Star Wars CCG community is still thriving (all considered, relatively speaking, of course). An idea from Kendall ‘corran’ Halman grew into an initiative to encourage players from all geographies, favoring of different #SWCCG formats, and accustomed to varying competitive levels to play casual Star Wars CCG in public places to build awareness of this awesome Game that is too often labeled “dead” in a non-endearing sense.

And this initiative was certainly well-received and exceeding of even Halman’s expectations: 99 players will be recognized for participation with an exclusive foil virtual slip and other smaller #SWCCG trinkets. Players posted pictures of themselves with friends (old and new) and family members (young and not young) living Star Wars in the unequivocal manner that Star Wars CCG enables. Some local league events coincided with #SWCCGinPublic, but a healthy portion of the submissions were from 2-4 player groups.

Venues included restaurants, bars/pubs/taverns, breweries, parks, BALLparks, the beach, bowling alleys, hotels lobbies, and of course local gaming stores/comic book shops. Reports flowed in – many proud fathers and sons playing with their sons and dads, friends re-acquainted after years gone by with their cards nestled in binders, and “eavesdroppings” in the best sense: “Hey, I used to play that game!” and “Wow, this game is still around? It was my favorite”.

Many tangential gamers are now newly familiar with the Players Committee and GEMP, and aware there IS in fact a place for retro and sealed formats, and that Cube is an option, and that of course, the PC continues to make new cards touching upon all corners of the Star Wars universe and timeline.

Denver, Colorado meet-up

“Play Star Wars CCG in Public” spanned Friday, April 21st through Sunday, April 30. Posts in the SWCCG Facebook Group, SWCCG Discord, PC Slack, and on Twitter with the #SWCCGinPublic hashtag conveyed the message that with just a bit of communication and awareness, Star Wars CCG players will show out the Game in all of its forms and complicated beauty.

All in all, the 10-day event emphasized the vibrancy of the Game and its reach. While major weekends, regional championships and online play are certainly great ways to celebrate #StarWarsCCG, sometimes grabbing a drink or a meal at a local restaurant and slinging cardboard in a casual manner is the best way.
